Bark in the Park!

My dog, Covan and I will be participating in the Anti-Cruelty Societies annual Bark in the Park 5k run/walk. The Anti-Cruelty society is Chicago's oldest, and largest, non-profit humane society and the event is a major fund raiser for them. We will be running with the AllRoverTown Team. If you'd like to run with us, register here. If you can't or don't want to run, you can still help out by sponsoring our run.

Some pics of the local Mitsubishi owners club meeting today at Quaker Steak and Lube. After three years in the club, I finally managed to make it to a meet with a running DSM.

Toronto Adventure

On the 8th, my friend Duke and I took a day off work to head up to Toronto for the weekend. While there, we saw the Dead Kennedys, one of our favorite bands play live. Getting there was an adventure. We left around 4 am and hit a pretty nasty snow storm.  After nine years of Indiana winters and a lifetime of cross country road trips, including a few whiteouts through the Appalachians, it wasn't the worst storm I'd ever driven through, but it was pretty hairy. We passed a few dozen spun out cars and at least two wrecked semis, one jackknifed on the side of the road, and the other completely on its side in a ditch.  The drive to Toronto from Fort Wayne is usually about 6 hours, but the storm really slowed us down. We didn't get into town until about 6:30 pm, about an hour and a half before the show. I passed out in the hotel room for a quick nap while Duke went down to the bar to start the night off, then we hit the town for an awesome show.

The Kennedys did not disappoint. Neither did the opening acts for that matter, especially the Skulligans, a Toronto based punk band. Obviously, it's not the same Dead Kennedys without Jello as the front man  but the new singer, Skip, held his own and the band the band put on a great performance. It was great to be able to mosh to Holiday in Cambodia and Anarchy for Sale in my lifetime, something I didn't think would ever happen. We met a lot of cool people at the show, and went out to a club with a few of them afterward. We were really impressed by how how open and friendly the people of Toronto were. Canadians make for a great crowd at a punk show.  It was probably the most light-hearted mosh pit I have ever been in. It was really refreshing to see that some elements of the punk scene are still alive and well, even if they are 800 miles north of me on a normal day.

The show alone was worth the trip, but Toronto has a bit of its own magic, and we really enjoyed the rest of the trip too. It was fun just to float around a city so full of culture. We like Toronto so much, that we convinced ourselves to stay an extra day while we waited for the roads to clear. We spend the extra day exploring the city, trying some shwarma (no idea on the spelling there), and local pizzeria  which involved an encounter with a very vocal bipolar homeless man and aspiring poet... but that's another story.

Below is a slideshow of the pictures from our adventure. Unfortunately, we didn't get many pictures of the shows, as we were too busy taking them in.

Happy Halloween

I kicked off my favorite holiday, Halloween fairly well this year.  Last weekend I went to a costume party with my sister and friends in Chicago, which was really fun. Tuesday, I went to see a rockabilly band at the latch string bar and grill, which was fairly impressive. Wednesday, I went to the Halloween celebration at the Rusty Spur with some friends, which was a pretty big hit as well.  This year, I decided to go as a ghost buster, which got good reactions at both parties.

Friday night, I went to a punk show at the Berlin Music Pub here in Fort Wayne.  If you haven't been to the Berlin, check it out. The bartenders were pretty friendly and the drinks weren't bad either.  I met Bruno Esposito, aka Lonewolf, a one man band out of Miami. He was a really cool guy, and he put on a great show.  I also saw 60 Cent Assassin and Tall Tales, both good bands. A fourth band headlined the night, but I can't remember their name at the moment. They were also really good though. The punk/hardcore scene in Fort Wayne is always hit or miss, but Friday was definitely a hit.  It was great to see a good local show.  It's been almost 13 years since my first show, I've seen plenty of good ones and my fair share of bad ones, but I never get tired of going.

How did you spend your Halloween? Did you go as anything Interesting?
